Herb will talk about one of his many specialties which is “Pest Management, Thinking Outside the Box”. Included in the talk will be information about pesticide reduction by timing applications when target pests are active, utilizing products that reduce runoff into the lake, solarization as opposed to herbicides to kill turf grass and alternate technologies to control ants, crickets, spiders, rodents, and ground squirrels. This will help us be responsible neighbors to our friends and animals.

Silvia Slemmer, Owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Carlsbad will give us an in-depth presentation

of "Nesting Hummingbirds & Song Birds in the Garden." She is an avid birder and will show us how to bring people and nature together. Her store carries Bird Food, Feeders, Garden Accents and Unique Gifts. We bring the Joy of Bird Feeding to your yards.

Silvia has owned the store for 12 years. She would visit the store 2 – 3 times per week and would ask the previous owners if they had anything new. “Silvia, you were here two days ago, so no, we don’t have anything new”. Well, she had to buy the store!

Our March 14, 2023, speakers will be Dominique Dashwood, Upcycler Program Lead and Shannon Pritchett, Community Orchard Program Lead from ProduceGood. They will discuss how their organization partners with homeowners and growers who have excess produce and redirects that food to people who need it. This program is a win-win for sustainability, to alleviate hunger and to repurpose waste from our landfills. We look forward to working with ProduceGood in 2023, when they have a gleaning date planned for Lake San Marcos.

Think fragrance, medicine, household uses, crafts, and more. Soil, water, light, and fertilizer needs will be discussed, and some delicious recipes will be included. 

Since 2001, Mary has been a docent at San Diego Botanic Garden, where she gives tours and teaches prospective docents about the joy of herbs. She is also a docent at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, leading walks in the Children's Program and focusing on the many native herbs there. As a Master Gardener, Mary gives talks on herbs around San Diego County.

Kathryn Blankinship has been a Master Gardener since 2014. She is a California native and life-long learner who taught adults and children for many years. Kathryn enjoys spending time with her collections of easy to grow orchids, camellias, bromeliads, and fruiting plants. She is a member of and past committee chair of several gardening groups. She has twice been the Chairperson for the North San Diego Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. She is a Life Member of the California Rare Fruit Growers and a Docent of the San Diego Botanic Garden. She sought to become a Master Gardener to learn more about horticulture and to share that knowledge with others who want to have success growing plants! Kathryn is part of the group of Master Gardeners who teach Beginning Vegetable Gardening.

Judy Macomber is the publisher of PetLovers Publications and a San Diego County Master Gardener. This combination allows her the pursuit her lifelong loves: plants and animals. 

She is also a housekeeper, cook, entertainment committee and vegetable grower for three incredible dogs. Through the years this has given her ample education on pet friendly plants, and opportunities to try to outwit “The Backyard Terrorist” …and sometimes she even wins!

Houseplants have so many wonderful features; They bring a bit of nature inside, increase the oxygen level in your home, and bring joy to your eyes. So, how do you choose the right houseplants for your home? How do you keep them alive? How do you treat those nasty little insects? 

This presentation will help you make all the right choices. Please join Linda as she presents an overview of houseplants and their care.

A Master Gardener since 2010, Linda’s love of teaching has allowed her to share information with many others. Linda has been a volunteer and Docent at San Diego Botanic Garden since 2008 and has held many roles in the garden since.

We get together to work on craft projects, exchange ideas and have a fun-filled morning with friends. Some people make gifts for others or decorations for their home and garden. There are three different projects to choose from and if you finish one project before the time is up you can move on to another one (it is not a race--most people work on their one project diligently during our hour together). 

This year we will be decorating bird houses, making wreaths, and decorating paper mâché pumpkins! There will be a materials fee of $20. for a member or $25 for a guest. 

This is one of our most popular programs of the year!

Fun time for all will be had at our Holiday Luncheon. Members and Guests are welcome. Our theme this year is Holiday Trees Around the World. Kick off the holiday season with a very fun celebration where luncheon, decorations, gifts, opportunity drawings and festive attire are plentiful. The fee is $42 . for members and $48. for guests. Whether you grow ornamentals and/or vegetables the precepts for creating an organically grown and ecologically balanced garden is the same. We will discuss the history of organic gardening and how to apply those principles in your own garden regardless if you plant in pots or a plot of soil.

Everything the Farm does is handmade and organic and done in small batches. We all look forward to what will be a very interesting and informative presentation about a specialty garden in North County. We have heard that you can participate in the harvest of the lavender in May and June--some of your fellow garden club members have experienced the harvest in past years. 

Our speakers for March are Wendy and David Berzansky and together they own the Red House Flower Company in El Cajon. They have been partners for a number of years since they met working together at the Old Globe Theatre and went on to marry.  The Red House Flower Company is known for the freshest flowers as they grow them themselves! They just go out to the farm and pick what they need every morning.  What could be fresher!! Wendy and David Berzansky are going to speak about growing proteas.  They will also have product to sell, and they will have a special something for our opportunity drawing. Looking forward to them talking about one of our favorite flowers, the Protea.

Ruth Tiffany is a master rosarian and is an award-winning rose exhibitor. She exhibits her roses in many rose shows each year and at the San Diego County Fair. Ruth moved to her current home in the San Carlos area in 2002 and she has planted and maintained a stunning rose garden filled with over 500 roses on a 7000 square foot lot.
